If prompted for a password then public key authentication has not been enabled or you public and private keypairs are not setup correctly or the client or server is not condigured correctly.

To learn about public key authentication, try doing a search on the internt for "howto: ssh public key authentication" and you should find more than one walkthrough document explaining how to do this.

Things to check:
¤ authorized_keys file contents
¤ permissions on various configuration files used by host and client
¤ configuration file settings (sshd_config, and ssh_config)
¤ proper command syntax for execution of client.

Also note, if you are using the authentication agent to store you private key, the different agents are not compatible, so use the agent that goes with the ssh client suite you are using..

Subject: authorized_key

Hello,

first I have to tell, that I am German and my English is more or less a little bit poor…

Anyway I have a question…

I try to manage the key authorized access to my windows pc running openSSH. So I copied the public key of the other machine (running Linux) into the file „authorized_keys“ in „…/root/.ssh“ (home-dir) on my windows computer called mondrian. But if I try to connect, I’m still asked for the password of root@mondrian. With given password, there aren’t any problems so far.

Best regards,

Jürgen Rott
