Re: "sshd -d" works but "sshd" does not

Thanks for the responses.

I've disabled the Windows Firepatch for the time being but it hasn't helped either OpenSSH for Windows or CopSSH.

I rebased copSSH but that didn't change anything.

Could the problem really still be dependency related if it still does not work when I restart the service manually after all the other services have finished loading?

Does anyone have any other thoughts?
Thank you all,
Jon Warren

  Two suggestions related to copSSH:

  1. copSSH version 1.3.10 is able to rebase cygwin related DLLs. Install copSSH and activate rebasing from copssh start menu.

  2. By default, the service installed by copSSH is dependent on TCP/IP protocol. Try to make it dependent on the service representing blocking software on your machine (firewall??), if it exists.

Given age, a bad memory and a splitting headache this answer is going to be short. (If you can call it an answer).

Your issue sounds like those noted several months ago with users using WinXP and a few 2k3. The problem had to do with the fw and when/how the ssh service starts.

Disabling the cruddy M$ fire'patch' would probably be a good solution if you have a real firewall of a fake one for that matter. Otherwise for a specific solution search through the archives.

(owww... my head...) shhhhhh you're making to much NOISE! Quiet, QUIET

I'm having a problem and I can not find a solution anywhere. Can you help me?

OpenSSH for Windows installed wonderfully for me on Windows 2000, but on XP SP2, it has been a different story.

Upon trying to log in using Putty, I get:

    M:\>putty -v Jon@apt.ucphidelts.com

    Server version: SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.8.1p1

    We claim version: SSH-2.0-PuTTY_Release_0.58

    Using SSH protocol version 2

    Doing Diffie-Hellman group exchange

Network error: Software caused connection abort

FATAL ERROR: Network error: Software caused connection abort

Similarly, using the SSH client that comes with OpenSSH, I get this:

    M:\>ssh Jon@apt.ucphidelts.com

Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

I tried copSSH but it did the same thing.

If I try logging in locally, it uses Username Jon, spits out the Usage Warning and then gives the error.

Now, on the server machine, if I "net stop opensshd" and then run "c:\Program Files\OpenSSH\usr\sbin\sshd", the same thing happens, but if append a "-d" on the end then it all works fine. I did Google one or two other people who had the same issue but their solutions either didn't work or didn't apply. I imagine it has something to do with permissions since I don't understand them.

Do you know what I should do?

    Thank you very much,

    Jon Warren
