Does it only occur for a particular user? Check /etc/passwd and you'll
probably find that the user's home directory is set to /cygdrive/z.
If it occurs for all users, perhaps there is a reference to /cygdrive/z in
one of the startup scripts (search all text files in /etc and its
subdirectories, you can use Windows search or grep -R "/cygdrive/z" *)
Another possibility is that a Windows environment variable is being
inherited. Open a command prompt (Start-Run cmd.exe) and type set. Look
for any entries with Z:. Use The System Control Panel (aka My Computer
Properties) to change Windows environment variables.
Hope one of these helps.

Subject: Re: problem with directory cygdrive/z/.ssh
Thanks for your help Kevin. Sorry for my original terse post.
I tried the commands that you suggested and got the follwing response:
***************************
$ net use
New connections will be remembered.
Status Local Remote Network
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- Unavailable N: \\nova\user_data Microsoft Windows Network *************************** there is no z: drive, so I do not understand where z: comes into it when my ssh session fails. I would like to use a local user for the file transfers I plan to do. I am logged into the Win2K box as a domain user however. Could that be part of the problem? Thanks again for your help.
