Permissions error installing sshd

I ran through Michael's excellent instructions and came unstuck at step 7, line #1

$ chmod -R og-w .
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/sshd_config': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/ssh_config': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/ssh_host_dsa_key': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/ssh_host_dsa_key.pub': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/ssh_host_key': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/ssh_host_key.pub': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/ssh_host_rsa_key': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./etc/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./var/empty': Permission denied
chmod: changing permissions of `./var/log/sshd.log': Permission denied

What have I done wrong, and how do I fix it please?
