OK, here are my log entries. The first four are from the "System" log -
they are the error massages about inetd and sshd failing to start. The
subsequent three are from the 'Application' log, showing me successfully
starting them by hand.
Do these speak to anyone?

If that were the case (dependency problems), you should see an error in
the application log. Look there and post anything interesting.
