David (and Michael) -
I am having a similar problem. I am attempting to install CygWin+SSHD as
per Michael's instructions.
I am running W2KP+latest SP/patches, in a 'Workgroup' configuration (not in
a domain).
I followed all of Michaels instructions to the letter, except for the
U-DOMAIN stuff, which seemed to apply only to boxes which belong to a
domain, and have a domain controller.
I also ran the 'fixperms' script prior to running
(I've done this very carefully, three times, making *sure* I followed
Michael's docs *exactly*).
My C: drive is NTFS (where cygwin/sshd is installed in c:\cygwin), but some
of my other drives are FAT32, incidentally. My CYGWIN var is 'ntsec tty'.
Initially, I had the same trouble as David, where sshd could not open the
keys when the service was started, however when I rebooted prior to
installing the service, things worked better. Having said that, even now
that the service is installed and running, it cannot access the keys at the
time a client connects.
I will have some additional hours on Sunday to work on this, I'll dump
extensive info into the list at that time if you haven't figured this out
yet.
Thanks!
